Laboratory Manager


  • Internist Clinical Laboratory (located in the CNY Medical Building in Syracuse, NY)


  • Full-time; Monday – Friday

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall
laboratory service operations, to include directing the work of technical staff. Plans, develops, organizes,
monitors and manages all elements of the clinical laboratory in order to deliver productive, professional
and efficient laboratory services.

Essential Management Responsibilities:

  • Greet, receive and handle patients in a courteous, professional manner.
    • Promote favorable patient relations at all times.
    • Develop and conduct programs for enhancing patient relations.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Manage and coordinate laboratory services in accordance with clinic and governmental
    standards, and within the established budget.
    • Analyze and prioritize daily work duties, evaluating effectiveness and modifying activities
      as necessary.
    • Maintain proper inventory levels of medical equipment and all required supplies. Reorder
      supplies in cost conscious manner.
    • In cooperation with IT department, manages installation and implementation of new
      technology and ensures appropriate use of systems.
  • Provide for and develop operating and capital budget for laboratory.
  • As part of the management team, attends meetings and communicates new directives to staff as
    • Provide for adequate office staff.
    • Prepares and manages position descriptions for each position in cooperation with Human
    • Assists in recruiting, hiring, retaining and terminating staff.
    • Maintains and manages master schedule of staff.
    • Assigns work and supervises daily operations.
    • Analyzes and forecasts staffing needs. Recommends changes to staff levels and required
      to maintain, enhance and improve patient flow and productivity.
    • Approve absences for paid time off.
    • Coordinates oversight of new staff orientation, training, and proficiency program(s),
      including annual skills checks, in cooperation with Human Resources.
    • Performance management responsibility for direct and indirect reports including hiring,
      orientation, developing, managing and evaluating job performance.
    • Supports staff and overall laboratory by assisting with staff functions in the event of low
    • Conducts frequent staff huddles and staff meetings to create a team environment.
  • Implements laboratory policies and oversees all procedures.
  • Demonstrates Compliance and HIPAA knowledge
  • Safety awareness and incident reporting
  • Demonstrates cleanliness and adheres to infection control procedures

Essential Technical Responsibilities:

  • Oversees and responsible for accurate specimen collection and processing according to
    established procedures.Ensure specimen integrity and public safety.
    • Ensure positive identification of specimens and routing of specimens.
  • Oversee all testing as per procedure manual.
    • Understand the principles of and competently perform a variety of techniques, including
      microscopy, automated clinical analysis, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
    • Responsible for maintaining quality control.
    • Perform all technical (automated and manual) procedures competently.
    • Understands and operates within limits of New York State and Federal regulations.
    • Meets established deadlines.
    • Ensures that “critical” values are communicated with the ordering provider.
    • Ensure accurate patient reports and distribute to providers, electronically or printed.
  • Responsible for ensuring preventative maintenance of all equipment.
    • Troubleshoots equipment and ensures effective repair. Communicates with appropriate
      service representative as needed. Follows through to ensure effective repair.
    • Responsible for accurate and daily quality control on all procedures, to include
      maintaining accurate and complete QC logs, either in the computer or manually.
    • Responsible for quality control and preventive maintenance. Understand and correctly
      apply relevant QC performance indicators. Maintain complete, accurate and neat logs
      (computer and manual).
  • Responsible for all log books and records files for send-out tests to reference labs (computer and
    manual) in neat and orderly fashion.
  • Works will billing agency in collecting correct billing information from patients and outside clients.
    Works with the finance department on approving and reconciling invoices.
  • Participate in the development of new procedures and continuing education.
  • Monthly Competency assessment for Medical Technologists and Med Training assignment for
    continuing education credits.
  • Ensure successful completion of bi-annual NYS Department of Health inspection and monthly
    proficiency testing through proper preparation and maintenance of required documents,
    manuals, policies and procedures as required.
  • Daily laboratory operations involve contact with Protected Health Information (PHI). Uses full
    spectrum of PHI as necessary to accomplish laboratory activities. Discloses PHI as necessary
    according to company policy and procedure.
  • Attends company sponsored training sessions on Compliance, HIPAA, and OSHA as required.
  • Client services – maintains relationship with ordering physicians.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or science-related field with sufficient experience to
    meet New York State requirements sub-part 58.
  • Must meet New York State requirements sub-part 58 for Laboratory Supervisor.
    • Minimum of six (6) years of direct laboratory experience
  • Holds a valid New York State professional laboratory license.
  • Previous experience with outpatient/independent laboratory testing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of previous or current laboratory supervisor experience
  • ASCP certification
  • Commitment to continuing education
  • Demonstrated competence in stressful situations/seeks guidance when necessary
  • Demonstrated competence with PC based computer programs/systems
  • Previous experience with outpatient/independent laboratory testing
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
